Alternative Energy - What Are Your Options?

There is a lot of information floating around about the benefits of using alternative energy.  But what does that mean exactly? And how can you benefit by saving money and helping the environment?

There are many types of alternative sources of energy.  Some of the most common and well known are: wind power and solar power. You could use one or a combination of both. Here are a few pros and cons of each source of energy.

1. Wind power. You've probably driven by a huge field of giant wind mill looking things.  These windmills are called wind turbines.  They create and store electricity.  The good thing about this source of energy is that it's free, abundant, and completely 'green'. 

The bad thing about turbines is that you will need a lot of them to power your home and they do take up quite a bit of room.

2. Solar energy.  Solar panels convert the energy of the sun into usable electricity.  The pros of solar energy is that it's clean, renewable, and free.

The cons are that you need sunlight so some climates won't provide as much electricity as others and you will need many solar panels in order to get a lot of energy.

If you can ever get to the point where you can generate more electricity than you need you can actually make money by selling your excess electricity back to the power companies.  It would be nice for a change to have them pay you, wouldn't it?

The bottom line is that using some of these alternative energy sources can help you lower your utility bill, help out the environment, and if you have enough room you could actually generate enough electricity to go 'off the grid' entirely and not have to pay for electricity at all.

Alternative Energy - Is It A Realistic Way To Save Energy, And The Planet?

Now more than ever we are trying to find ways to save money and we are more concerned with the effect we have on our environment.  Between the meltdown of the economy and the desire to 'go green' we are looking at alternative energy with more interest than ever before.

There are many sources of renewable energy for you to use.  Most of them can be inexpensive to start up, though there will be some initial expense and it will take time, usually only a matter of months, to recoup your initial investment.

Two of the most common sources of renewable energy for home use are solar and wind.  Both can be set up fairly easily by you.

To generate power from the wind a wind turbine is what you would need.  These look like windmills and they come in all sizes, and even shapes.  The wind is turned into electricity and can be stored in a battery for later use. 

The downside is that in order to generate enough electricity for your home you would need a lot of turbines, and we are not at the point yet where we have a efficient means of storing and converting the energy. 

Solar energy is another great way to save some electricity costs.  These consist of panels on the roof, or wherever they will get a lot of sunlight, and they convert sunlight into electricity.  As is the case with turbines you will need a lot of panels to provide enough electricity to run your home.

Both of these sources of energy are real and viable for home use.  Don't expect to get completely off the grid just by putting up a turbine or two and some solar panels, but you can expect to save some money. 

As technology advances the storage and conversion methods will improve too  making these forms of alternative energy even more cost effective than they are today.

DIY Wind Turbine- It's Easier Than You Think

Looking for inexpensive, yet effective, alternative energy sources is becoming extremely popular for many homeowners.  This is due in equal parts to the rising energy costs as well as a desire to go green.

The good news is that building a DIY wind turbine is not only feasible, it's inexpensive and effective at supplying much of the electricity your home needs.

Today you have a choice on the size of the turbine you choose as well as the shape.  You can use the traditional windmill style turbine or a newer, cooler looking, vertical turbine.

Many mistakenly believe that it will cost a lot of money to build a turbine.  That simply is not true.

It is true that if you wanted to buy a turbine it would probably be cost prohibitive.  Buying a turbine will cost about $1,000 or higher.  Building your own will only cost a few hundred dollars at most.

All the parts you need can be bought at any hardware store.  It should only take you several hours, or one day, at most to build your turbine.

It doesn't matter if you want to build a windmill style turbine or a vertical style turbine, you can use the same plans for either type.

A vertical style turbine has the advantage of allowing you to use more blades in the design without making it take up more space.  Having additional blades will allow your turbine to be more effective because it will be even more sensitive to less wind.

So do yourself a favor, build a DIY wind turbine.  You can do this project easily and it won't cost you very much.  The advantages though are many: you'll pay less on your utility bills, and you'll be helping the environment, to name just two.
